Born to an Afgan horse breeder in Sasaram, Sher Shah went on to drive out the Mughal Emperor Humayun and become the Emperor himself. In his short reign of 5 years he executed remarkably large and distant projects. He laid the administration system for the empire, which was adopted by Akbar, connected Bengal and Peshawar with a road and built numerous forts and buildings.
Perhaps in an attempt for legitimacy and noble descent, he built his father, Hassan Shah, a tomb fit for an emperor. It stands at Sasaram, known locally as the Sukha Roza.
Nearby, set in a large artificial tank is Sher Shah’s own tomb. This was built by Sher Shah and completed by his son, Islam Shah after Sher Shah’s death in the siege of Kalinjar in 1545. Built with spectacular proportions, the tomb has one of the largest domes in India.
