VILLAGE COMMUNITY PROJECTS
SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES

Farming in the Maksudpur region was a zero energy operation run on centuries old principles of agriculture and watershed management. In the past few decades the government sponsored drive for ‘High Yield’ using ‘Modern Scientific Techniques’ has been devastating for biodiversity and the ecology.

There has been an effort by the Maksudpur Trust to revive some old, fast disappearing traditional agricultural practices. Traditional varieties are grown in rotation to give the soil time to recuperate; organic pesticides and manure are sourced from the organic dairy and produce is processed using chemical free methods.

PRIMARY EDUCATION

To augment the primary education of the government run village school, MIRENS (a public benefit trust of Maksudpur) runs a non-formal learning center. The center’s schedule does not clash with timings of the local school, thus enabling children to be part of both.

The main focus of the teachers at the center is to bring school dropouts back to the classroom, and to provide extra tuition to meritorious students who can’t afford private tutors.

HEALTHCARE

MIRENS runs a bi-weekly homeopathic dispensary that gives out treatment to more than 500 patients every week. Staffed by three doctors and volunteers from the area, the doctors examine patients and give out appropriate medicines for one week, all at a subsidized participatory cost two rupees.

Now in its ninth year running, without a single days break in its schedule, the dispensary has treated more than three and a half million patients from the radius of a hundred kilometers around Maksudpur.
